The American Youth Hostel

The Hostel, a designated landmark, opened in 1990. The original building was constructed in 1881-83 by the Association for the Relief of Aged Indigent Respectable Females to help widows of the Revolutionary War and the War of 1812. The Association maintained the building until 1974. An addition was built in 1907-08.


Cathedral of St. John the Divine

The Gothic Cathedral is reported to be the largest cathedral and Anglican Church in the world. The cornerstone was laid on December 27, 1892, and in its history, has undergone design changes and interruptions in construction during both World Wars. In December, 2001, a large fire forced it to close for repairs. The Cathedral was re-opened and re-dedicated in November, 2008.


St. Michael’s Church

St. Michael’s was established in 1807 by families attending Trinity Church on Wall Street who wanted a convenient place of worship near their summer homes in the Bloomingdale area of Manhattan. Work on interior decorations and windows designed by Louis Comfort Tiffany and others was started in 1895 and completed in 1920. The church celebrated its bicentennial in 2007 and has been designated a landmark.
